Artist Statement
“You advance or you retreat… sometimes you play notes and sometimes you breathe. You develop a philosophy for becoming alive.” - Sam Gilliam, 2017
Through metaphors and process, my art explores the cycle of construction and destruction in emotional and physical spaces.
"Painting" isn’t all successes and life sure as shit ain’t. Let’s just say I used to be timid, heavy, and full of hesitation when I painted. Now, I’m behaving like the bold, risk taking artist I am. My greatest joys come from my biggest risks.
Art reflects my life. My life is reflected in my art. I use text to create text/ure. Words have tone, meaning, and connections that I make use of in my work. For me, the making of the work solidifies the sentiment.
My art lays it all out there. Uncovering the messy and proclaiming again, I am still whole.
Emotions are heavy. Release them. I make art to make myself happy. I make art to make other people happy. I share my recipe for being alive.
And through my art, l’ll uncover something new or let something else go - and recreate, and recreate, and recreate myself again.
